Description:
While observing m33 at low power I noticed how bright ngc 604 was and decided to
take a look with higher power.  I'm glad I did!  I was amazed to be able to see
detail in an extragalactic nebula.  It looked for all the world like a child's
representation of a Christmas tree, complete with blinking lights!  There were
two roughly triangular sections of nebulosity stacked one on top of the other
with the top (western) section being about twice as bright as the eastern
section.  The sections were aligned so that they pointed to the west northwest
and the north side of the western section was obviously concave.  The eastern
section was not aligned exactly with the western section but was aligned more
toward the west.  A bright knot was seen at each end of the base
of both sections now and then when the seeing settled down.  From time to time
other bright knots were seen but I did not note there positions, I did not see
them often enough.  Just to the northwest was a faint area of nebulosity.
Another faint area of nebulosity lay about 2' to the southeast and appeared to
have a bright knot at it's center.  Unfortunatly I did not record in my notes
whether or not I used my orion ultrablock filter for this observation.  Jens
Bohle recently reported seeing 2 stars in ngc 604 with a 16" telescope and 4
stars with a 20".  I have no idea whether or not I was seeing stars or bright
knots within the nebula, but either way, it is a great object!  A drawing is
